Broken toe35-year-old Kara Goucher has withdrawn from the ING New York City Marathon this year, suffering from complications due to a broken toe. Goucher put on her blog that she underwent her injury on her second metatarsal of her right foot during summer training. She had the injury in a training run, which involved cross-training, “850 minutes a week.”

“Eight weeks later, it was time to start running outdoors,” Goucher wrote. “The marathon was now 10 weeks away, and I needed to get after it! The transition did not go well. What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture). Another type of trauma that can break a toe is repeated activity that places stress on the toe for prolonged periods of time.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

· throbbing pain
· swelling
· bruising on the skin and toenail
· the inability to move the toe with ease.
· toe appears crooked or disfigured
· tingling or numbness in the toe
· injured person experiences fever or chills throughout their body, and when there is an open, bleeding wound present on the toe.

Generally, a minor toe break will heal without long-term complications, but it is important to discontinue activities that put pressure on the toe. It is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated on pillows. Swelling can be alleviated by placing an ice pack on the broken toe for 15 minutes every two hours then taping the two toes together with medical tape.

Broken Foot Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

A broken foot is caused by one of the bones in the foot ‘breaking’, or fracturing. Bones typically break when the bone is either bended, crushed, or stretched beyond its natural capabilities. Usually the location of the fracture indicates how the break occurred, whether it was through an object, fall, or any other type of injury.

Common Symptoms of Broken Feet:

· Bruising
· Pain
· Redness
· Swelling
· Blue (foot)
· Numbness
· Cold
· Misshapen
· Cuts
· Deformities

Those who are experiencing any of these symptoms, or suspect that they have a broken foot, should seek medical attention in a center where x-rays can be performed. This is especially urgent if any of the symptoms include numbness, blue coloring, cold feet, cuts, misshapen toes or deformities as these indicate more severe cases.
