Have you just been diagnosed with Haglund’s Deformity? Then it’s time you found out more about your condition!
Haglund’s Deformity isn’t one of the more common foot conditions you hear about but it certainly isn’t one that should be ignored. This foot problem is characterized by a bony protrusion on the back of the heel. This bump can cause redness, tenderness, swelling and even serious heel pain. If our Chandler foot doctors Dr. Alan Discont and Dr. Krahn have just diagnosed you with Haglund’s Deformity find out more about the causes and your treatment options.
What causes Haglund’s Deformity?
If you find yourself wearing tight or stiff shoes that put pressure on your heels then you may be dealing with Haglund’s Deformity. Women who wear high heels are often more likely to develop this condition.
Also, those with high arches or those with tight Achilles tendons may find themselves more at risk for developing this condition.
What are my treatment options?
Our Chandler, AZ podiatrists can often help you manage this condition with simple at-home measures that you can take to reduce pain and to take pressure off the heel. Common treatments include:
- Taking commercial pain relievers like ibuprofen
- Icing the heel for up to 20 minutes at a time a couple times a day to reduce swelling
- Wearing shoes that won’t put pressure on your heel bone, such as open-back shoes
- Wearing prescription orthotics or a heel pad
- Getting ultrasound treatments to reduce pain and inflammation
Of course, if you don’t experience the relief you were hoping for with non-invasive measures the next option is surgery. During your surgery, we will go in and remove the excess bone from your heel.
