New Survey Shows Foot Problems Extremely Common in U.S.

footandankleinjuries.pngAccording to the American Podiatric Medical Association’s recent Today’s Podiatrist survey, about 77% of U.S. adults have experienced foot pain in their lives, but only about a third of those people considered going to a podiatrist or doctor to get help. Another striking result of the research was that among the individuals surveyed who reported having chronic foot pain; about 83% claimed that their condition prevents them from taking part in certain physical activities.

"It's not surprising to see how many people are affected by foot pain, when survey results show that we view our feet as the least important body part in terms of our overall health and wellbeing," said APMA President Frank Spinosa, DPM.

A podiatrist is a doctor who is specially certified to treat problems of the feet and ankles. What is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek care of a podiatrist when they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as: heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • physical therapy
  • drugs
  • perform surgery on lower extremity fractures
  • orthotic inserts or soles

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.
