Former World no. 1 Ana Ivanovic reportedly sustained a broken toe after her defeat in the first round of the Australian Open against Lucie Hradecka. The site Vecernjih Novosti stated, “Ana has broken a toe—told by the team of the Serbian—she needed a break. Definitely she will not play in Fed Cup, maybe she will return in Dubai (tournament scheduled February 15th-21st)”. While her absence from the Federation Cup match against Austria would normally not be a cause for concern, Ivanovic must play in at least one match for her national team if she wants to participate in the Olympic Games. Ivanovic’s participation in the miniature play-off will be essential with Rio de Janeiro getting closer and closer.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. According to a study conducted by scientists at Guangzhou Dongsheng Hospital and Guangzhou Social Welfare House, acupuncture is an effective treatment for heel pain. Sixty-six patients with some developed form of heel pain were used as a part of the experiment directed by researcher Xu Xuemeng and his team. The control group was compromised of participants that were given experiment drugs and the rest of the patients were given a filiform acupuncture needle treatment.

Within six months, the participants that had received acupuncture had an effectiveness rating of 97% while the effectiveness rating of the control group was just 76%. Acupuncture has been especially effective for those suffering from Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

Causes of Heel Pain

● Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

● Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

● Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

How to Relieve Swollen AnklesSwollen Ankles

Whether you are pregnant, have increased blood in your body or decreased circulation, or maybe you are a workaholic who is always standing or sitting for long periods of time, there is relief for your swollen ankles. 22-year-old Carl Griffiths of Britain is unable to play for his rugby club because he is unable to find a pair of boots that fit his size 21 feet. For the past 3 years, Griffiths played for Trimsaran rugby club with size 18 boots. His toes would curl up at the ends his shoes, which have finally fallen apart after being held together with black sticky tape. Griffiths has yet to find a sports club that makes size 21 boots, causing the player to seek out outside help to find boots in his size. “Not being able to play because of not having shoes is just aggravating,” Griffiths stated.  “At least when you have an injury, you know you just can’t play for a while. But when I’m out just because of not having shoes that fit, it’s just really frustrating.”

Getting the Right Shoe Size

Sometimes it may be difficult finding the right shoe size especially because shoe sizes tend to vary depending on the brand and company you are looking for. A size 6 for one brand may be a size 7 in another. Although many people know their exact shoe size, it can range within 2 sizes depending on where they shop.

So it is important not to always go for a size 7 just because you think you might be a size 7 universally. It is best to try on the shoe and walk around for a bit to see how it fits and how it feels. Comfort is essential and the fitting has to be well otherwise it can lead to blisters, bruises at the back of the ankle and it can also hurt your toes if the shoe is too tight for example.

People walk a lot, so it is important for you to find what is comfortable when it is possible.
